3) Let your staff know the best way to reach you with something urgent. Look at the environment you will be in while you’re away and choose the medium that will be least intrusive. Text is often good.
Even if I’m in a conference session or meeting I will have my phone on vibrate and excuse myself if I see something from a staff member that I think needs immediate attention.
4) Plan some time each day while you’re away to process all of your voice messages and emails. If you’re a morning person get up a little early and if you’re a night person stay up a little late. If you keep up with your voice messages and emails you won’t find yourself “behind” when you get back to your office.
I hope some of these strategies will help you maximize the time you spend working away from your office. I’d love for you to leave a comment below with some of the strategies that have helped you to be effective when you’re out of your office. I’d love to learn to be more effective.
One of the best resources I’ve heard on maximizing your time in general is an audio training done by my aforementioned mentor/friend Nelson Searcy entitled “Time Management for Busy Pastors.” You can check it out by CLICKING HERE (anybody could benefit from this resource whether you’re a pastor or not).
